Chapter 1 – The Table I Never Chose

On our third wedding anniversary, I stood inside a beautiful restaurant and stared at a table crowded with Eric’s family. A glittery banner hung behind them, cupcakes covered the table, and Judith—my mother-in-law—smiled as though she had given me exactly what I wanted.

I had asked for one quiet evening with my husband. Our first anniversary had become Judith’s family brunch. The second had turned into a buffet for relatives. This year, Eric had repeatedly promised it would be only us.

Even while driving there, he had dismissed Judith’s constant calls as questions about his father Joe’s medication. I had noticed his tight jaw, but I wanted to trust him. I had worn a deep green dress with pearl-trimmed sleeves and heels meant for a romantic dinner, not another family gathering.

“We can celebrate with them first,” Eric whispered. “Then we’ll have time alone.”

I walked outside instead. Eric followed, accusing me of being rude to people who were already seated. I told him the cruelty wasn’t my departure. It was his decision to lie because disappointing me felt easier than disappointing his mother.

Judith came out in her pink shawl and urged me to respect the family. When she called me ungrateful, I calmly ordered a cab.

Eric arrived home after midnight and turned his back to me in bed. The next morning, Judith texted that I had embarrassed her son and should behave like a wife instead of a “drama queen.”

I muted her message, poured coffee, and called my best friend, Tasha.
