Claire worked in payroll administration, not law, but she knew records mattered. She told me to save the group-chat messages, photograph the refrigerator, write down Mr. Thompson’s exact words, and request my personnel file in writing. Beth helped me build a timeline while Matilda sat nearby, quietly remembering dates I had forgotten.

Three days later, Danny called. He sounded ashamed. He had overheard Mr. Thompson discussing my replacement before I ever brought in the fridge. Management wanted to reduce payroll, and my years of service made me more expensive than a new hire. Danny also admitted employees had been encouraged to complain about my “attitude,” though several believed they were only answering an informal survey.

Then Lisa came to our house. She confessed that she had taken two of my lunches during a desperate week when she was supporting an unemployed brother and hiding her own financial trouble. Karen had taken another, assuming food in the communal refrigerator was available because management had never enforced labels. Their choices were wrong, Lisa said, but neither woman had asked for my dismissal.

Lisa handed me printed emails from accounting. One message described the refrigerator as a convenient “final incident.” Another mentioned replacing a high-cost senior employee before the next benefits review.

I wanted to storm into the factory and humiliate everyone involved. Matilda squeezed my hand. “Ask for truth, Arnie,” she said. “Not revenge.”

So I filed a formal age-discrimination complaint and requested mediation. I included the emails, my clean evaluations, the job posting for my replacement, and Mr. Thompson’s own words.
