I followed the letter’s instructions after dark. The designated dumpster stood across from a small coffee shop, half hidden by a broken fence. I placed the bank envelope behind a loose brick, returned to my car, and drove away without looking back. At home, Mark arrived with takeout and kissed my forehead as though nothing in our life had changed. I hated myself for studying his expression and wondering whether every ordinary gesture had been rehearsed.

Sleep would not come. If Mrs. Parker truly wanted silence, why threaten my job instead of confronting Mark? Why describe me as “the woman whose husband ruins families” when she was supposedly participating in the betrayal? More troubling, only Mark knew exactly how much we had saved. I began to understand that paying had not purchased peace. It had simply shown the writer that fear could control me.

The next day, I placed the original letter in a clear folder and wrote down every detail I could remember. After dismissal, I returned to the coffee shop. A security camera above its rear entrance faced the dumpster. The manager initially refused to show me anything, which was reasonable, but she agreed to preserve the footage after seeing the letter. When I said I might call the police, she let me view the relevant minutes without making a copy. On the grainy screen, I watched myself leave the envelope. Seven minutes later, someone crossed the street, looked both ways, and reached behind the brick. The face was shadowed, but the walk was unmistakable.
