The Letter in My School Mailbox

I replayed the footage until the manager gently asked whether I needed a chair. Mark had collected the money, but I still did not know whether Mrs. Parker was involved. I drove to her home with the letter sealed inside my folder. Anger wanted me to accuse her on the doorstep. My better judgment reminded me that I was a teacher speaking to a parent, and that suspicion was not proof.

Mrs. Parker opened the door in exercise clothes and immediately asked whether Alison was all right. I told her the matter was private and unrelated to her daughter’s schoolwork. Then I showed her the letter. As she read, surprise gave way to fear. She said she had met Mark only once, briefly, at a fundraiser. She was not his mistress and had never requested money from me.

“Someone used my name because they knew it would hurt you,” she said quietly. “And because they thought you’d be too embarrassed to ask me.”

That sentence cleared the fog. The scheme depended on two women distrusting each other while Mark remained beyond suspicion. Mrs. Parker offered to speak with the police and asked me to keep Alison out of any adult dispute. I promised I would. Before leaving, I apologized for arriving with doubt in my heart. She did not pretend the accusation was painless, but she accepted my apology with grace.

In my car, I photographed the letter, called the coffee shop manager to confirm the footage would be saved, and contacted an attorney. Then I drove home. For the first time since opening the envelope, I was not acting from panic. I was acting from truth.
