Willie Spence brings the soul to Rihanna’s hit “Diamonds”
Willie Spence, a gifted vocalist known for his soulful interpretation of Rihanna’s chart-topping song “Diamonds,” left an indelible mark on his listeners. His rendition of the hit track garnered significant attention, amassing tens of millions of views on YouTube and showcasing the unique vocal talent that defined his career. Born on June 18, 1999, in West Palm Beach, Florida, Spence spent his formative years in Douglas, Georgia, before eventually relocating to Atlanta to pursue his musical aspirations. His journey from a high school student posting videos online to a national stage performer demonstrated a consistent dedication to his craft.
Spence first gained widespread recognition while still in high school, when his 2017 viral performance of “Diamonds” introduced his powerful voice to a global audience. This early success served as a springboard for his professional journey, leading him to compete on the 19th season of American Idol. Throughout the competition, his performances resonated deeply with both the panel of judges and the viewing public. Spence ultimately secured the position of runner-up, finishing the season behind winner Chayce Beckham. It is a notable detail that Beckham, the eventual winner of the 19th season, had survived his own serious car accident just two weeks prior to his initial audition for the program.
Beyond his success on the competition stage, Spence was dedicated to developing his own original music. In 2021, he released a five-track EP titled Never Be Alone. The title track, written by Breaking Benjamin rhythm guitarist Keith Wallen, represented a milestone for the artist. Spence expressed great enthusiasm regarding the project, particularly the opportunity to collaborate with producer Tricky Stewart, describing the experience as a realization of a long-held dream. At the time of the EP’s release, he shared his hope that listeners would connect with the emotional depth he poured into his work, encouraging his audience to pursue their own ambitions through focus and perseverance. He noted that he put his personality and all of his feelings into every song he recorded, aiming to deliver a message of resilience.
