A well-deserved 71M YouTube views for a flashmob dancing to a Grease medley in the grandeur of Antwerp’s Grand Central Station
A YouTube flash mob filmed at Antwerp Central Station has accumulated roughly 80 million views. The event brought together 250 dancers for a Grease medley shortly before the stage production opened in Antwerp. Rather than occurring spontaneously, it was a planned promotional performance featuring the musical’s cast.
Additional participants were presumably recruited through nearby drama and dance classes. Presented publicly to advertise the production, the routine was professionally recorded for distribution through the theatre’s social media. Meanwhile, the railway station remained open, with travelers continuing to catch trains and meet other people.
The author considers Antwerp Central the finest railway building in Belgium. Its design is difficult to place in a single category because architect Delacenserie drew on an unusually broad assortment of influences. That elaborate setting distinguishes the performance, while the everyday activity of a functioning station remains part of what the camera captures.
The editing moves among several layers of action. Principal performers assume their positions and begin interacting, as supporting dancers rush across the background before forming groups. Commuters pass through the building; some interrupt their journeys to watch or film the routine on their phones. All of this unfolds within the station’s grand and unconventional architecture.
Individual figures become recognizable amid the large ensemble. Nuns shown at one point can be noticed again later, and identifying people across different shots encourages repeated viewing. The Belgian setting also gives the flash mob a trace of Eurovision-style spectacle.
