When Sting Joined Tom Jones for an Unexpected TFI Friday Duet

Channel 4 brought Sting and Tom Jones onto the same TFI Friday episode on September 10, 1999. Presented by Chris Evans, the programme used an informal studio space styled like a bar rather than the setting of a large, highly polished concert. Within that environment, Sting and Jones joined forces for “Every Breath You Take.” The performance paired the song’s writer with Jones, whose rich and powerful delivery altered the character of the familiar Police number. An official archive clip from TFI Friday preserves the collaboration between two distinctive singers from British pop.

Sting originally wrote “Every Breath You Take” for Synchronicity, the Police album released in 1983. Despite its melodic surface and the romantic interpretation often attached to it, his account of the composition gives it a more troubling subject. He has said that the song concerns possessive love and obsessive surveillance, not a simple expression of romance. That background added an important dimension to the TFI Friday rendition: Sting performed material he had written while Jones approached it with his own robust voice, making the duet an unusual treatment of one of the Police’s most enduring songs.

Music was only one component of the TFI Friday format. The series combined live performances with celebrity conversations and comedy, presenting those elements through a notably informal style. Records for the September 10 instalment identify Jones, Sting, Jamiroquai and Space as guests. Their inclusion placed artists representing several different musical approaches within one broadcast. It was in this mixed and relaxed television context—not as part of an arena production—that Sting and Jones performed “Every Breath You Take” together.

The duet did not account for all of Sting’s music during the programme. His official archive also lists a performance of “Brand New Day.” He and Jones shared the stage again for a short version of “Green, Green Grass of Home,” meaning their work together that evening extended beyond the better-known “Every Breath You Take” clip. Surviving footage from the episode consequently documents multiple musical moments involving the two singers: their central duet, their brief rendition of the song associated here with Jones, and Sting’s separate performance of material connected to his new album.
