THE VOICE: Country Singer Earns 4-Chair Turn After Breathtaking Rendition Of Vince Gill’s “When I Call Your Name”

The unanimous chair turn meant Mathews did not have to wait for the coaches to decide whether she had earned a place in the competition. Instead, all four had to compete for her commitment. Green and Clarkson had each tied their appeals to country music, though they emphasized different aspects of the audition. Green focused on the difficulty of interpreting a Gill song, the memories it stirred for him and the prospect of working together. Clarkson based her case on the vocal qualities that made her think of Loveless, Rimes and other admired artists.

Levine and Queen Latifah also joined the effort to recruit Mathews, ensuring that she heard an argument from every member of the coaching panel before making her choice. Levine underscored his appeal by dropping to one knee while delivering his pitch. With Clarkson, Levine, Queen Latifah and Green all having turned for the same singer, Mathews was able to consider four possible teams rather than simply accept the only available offer. Each coach had pressed a button during her rendition and then made a case for becoming the person who would guide her.

Despite entering the Blind Auditions as a country singer and earning detailed praise rooted in that genre, Mathews did not choose the coach whose pitch centered on Gill and shared country influences. Green’s account of being reminded of his Alabama upbringing, his assessment that she had met the demands of the song and his proposal that they work together were not enough to win her selection. Clarkson’s comparisons to Loveless and Rimes did not determine the outcome either, while Levine’s decision to make his case from one knee also failed to secure her commitment. After listening to all four coaches, Mathews moved outside her country-music roots and selected Queen Latifah as her coach.
