I Created a Tinder Profile for My Lonely Mother, but Regretted It When I Saw Who Was Messaging Her

My mom, Phoebe, gave up everything to raise me. After my dad walked out on us when I was young, she was the one constant in my life. She was always there, the only one I could rely on, and I knew that more than anything, she deserved happiness. So I decided to do something special for her—help her find love again. I figured it wasn’t too late for her to meet someone nice, especially in today’s world with dating apps. But what I didn’t expect was to find out who she was going on a date with!

It was a typical weekend when I decided to visit my mom at her house. I’m her only daughter, and she’s always been alone. At 56, she had spent most of her life focusing on me, putting her own happiness aside. Even though finding a partner at her age seemed challenging, I was optimistic that we could change that.

We were in her cozy living room, the walls lined with family photos and memories of my childhood, when I convinced her to try out a dating app. She was shy about the idea, so I did what any good daughter would do—I grabbed my phone and started taking pictures of her, guiding her to strike the best pose.

“Mom, stand by the window, the lighting is perfect here,” I said, snapping a few photos as she reluctantly complied.

“I don’t know, Lucy,” she said hesitantly. “Aren’t I a little too old for this?”

“Mom, love doesn’t have an expiration date,” I reassured her, capturing another shot as she smiled softly. “You deserve to find someone who makes you happy.”

Once I had a few great photos, we sat down to create her dating profile. We wrote a warm and thoughtful description of who she was—a kind-hearted mother who loved gardening and cooking. “Looking for someone to share laughs and good meals with,” we added with a chuckle. It was simple, but it felt right.

By the time we finished, she was laughing and relaxed. “I still can’t believe I’m doing this,” she said, shaking her head.

“Trust me, Mom, this is going to be great,” I said, feeling proud that I had managed to push her out of her comfort zone.

The next day, back at work, my mind was still buzzing with excitement about the possibilities for my mom. During our morning coffee break, my colleague Natalie filled me in on some unexpected office gossip.

“Lucy, you won’t believe this,” she said, leaning in conspiratorially. “Michael—our boss—has been acting really weird. He’s been glued to his phone, smiling like a kid in love. Can you imagine?”

I raised an eyebrow. “Michael? Our workaholic boss? Smiling? That’s a first.”

Natalie nodded enthusiastically. “I’m telling you, it’s like he’s texting someone special. I’m dying to know who it is!”

Curiosity piqued, we concocted a plan to find out more. Natalie distracted Michael by asking for help with some paperwork, while I sneaked a peek at his phone. What I saw nearly made me drop the device.

It was my mother. Michael had been messaging my mom all night, and they had already set up a date for that evening! I stared at the screen in disbelief, my mind racing with the implications. My mother, who I had just helped create a dating profile, was about to go on a date with my boss?

I handed the phone back to Natalie, forcing a smile. “Oh, just some woman. No big deal,” I said, trying to sound casual, but inside, I was panicking. How could this be happening? Of all the people my mom could have connected with, why did it have to be Michael?

As the day wore on, I couldn’t stop thinking about it. The idea of Michael becoming my potential stepfather was too weird, and I knew I had to stop the date before it even started.

As the workday wound down, I noticed Michael packing up his things, getting ready to leave early for the date. Desperate, I approached him with a fake emergency. “Michael, could you take a look at this report? I’m not sure I’ve done it correctly.”

Michael glanced at the clock, clearly eager to leave, but he sighed and agreed to help. He sat down to review the document, which I had purposely filled with mistakes to buy time. As he worked through it, I felt a pang of guilt, knowing I was sabotaging my mother’s chance at happiness.

But Michael finished the review much faster than I had anticipated. He was just about to head out when, in my desperation, I accidentally-on-purpose knocked over his coffee, spilling it all over his laptop.

“Lucy!” he exclaimed, grabbing the soaked laptop and trying to salvage it.

“I’m so sorry!” I stammered, feigning regret. “It was an accident, I swear.”

Michael looked frustrated but defeated. “Well, I guess I’ll have to stay and finish this on another computer,” he said, resigned to the fact that he wouldn’t make his date after all.

Feeling terrible but relieved, I returned to my desk. I had stopped the date, but at what cost? I had interfered in something that wasn’t mine to control, and the guilt weighed heavily on me. That evening, I called my mom to check in on her.

“Maybe this whole dating thing isn’t for me, sweetheart,” she said softly. “I was really looking forward to tonight, but he canceled. Maybe I’m just not cut out for this.”

Her words broke my heart. I had robbed her of a chance to find happiness because of my own selfish fears. I knew I had to make things right.

The next day, I went to Michael’s office and confessed everything. “Michael, I need to be honest with you,” I began. “Phoebe… she’s my mom.”

His eyes widened in shock. “Your mom?”

I nodded, feeling the weight of my actions pressing down on me. “I saw your messages, and I panicked. I didn’t want you two to go on a date because I thought it would be too awkward. I realize now that I was being selfish, and I’m sorry.”

Michael was silent for a moment, processing everything. Then, to my surprise, he smiled. “Lucy, it’s okay. I had no idea she was your mom, but I really like her. She seems like a wonderful woman.”

That evening, I brought Michael to my mom’s house. When she opened the door, her eyes widened in surprise.

“Lucy? Michael? What are you doing here?” she asked, clearly confused.

I took a deep breath and explained everything—how I had tried to sabotage their date out of fear, and how sorry I was for interfering.

To my relief, my mom smiled warmly. “Lucy, I understand why you did what you did. But I need to find happiness too. And if Michael is someone who can bring that into my life, then we should give it a chance.”

Michael nodded in agreement. “I would love the opportunity to get to know your mom better, Lucy.”

In the end, I learned that love doesn’t always follow the path we expect. My mom and Michael did get their chance, and seeing them happy together made me realize that sometimes, the best thing we can do is step aside and let love happen on its own terms.
