My husband always said he was taking the kids “to grandma”—until one day our daughter revealed it was all a lie.

I didn’t think anything was wrong when my husband began taking our children to his mother’s house on Saturdays. However, my daughter said something one day that completely altered the course of events.

I’ve always had faith in Mikhail, my husband. He was a fantastic father to our five-year-old Vanya and seven-year-old Anya, as well as a trustworthy companion. He was the type of father that every child aspires to have; he told bedtime stories, went to school plays, and played hide-and-seek with them in the yard.

I didn’t think twice when he started taking the kids to see his mother, Grandma Diana, on Saturdays. Diana loved her grandchildren; she taught them to knit, baked cookies with them, and let them dig in the garden.

Mikhail seemed determined to prevent her from feeling lonely after her husband’s death. I was moved by it. These Saturday excursions and their growing intimacy felt natural.

But then, little red flags began to appear.

My mother-in-law first stopped discussing the visits. Every week when we called, she would excitedly tell us about the grandchildren. Then one day, when I inquired in passing,

How are the children doing? It must be pleasant to see them each week.

She paused.

She said, “Oh, well, yes, dear,” but her voice sounded weird and out of place.

Perhaps she was simply dealing with her loss, I reasoned.

Mikhail also started to insist that I spend more time at home.

For my mom and the children, that is a special time. He would kiss me on the cheek and say, “Amina, you need a break.” “For once, enjoy some peace and quiet.”

He was partially correct; I did like those peaceful Saturday mornings by myself. But I kept seeing him turn down my invitation to go with them. The uneasiness began at that point. He was avoiding me, but why?

Anya ran back into the car one morning to find Mikhail and Vanya already there, as usual.

She yelled, “I forgot my jacket!” as she walked by.

Saying, “Behave well at grandma’s,” I grinned.

First she froze, then she gave me a weird, mature look.

“Mom,” she muttered. “Grandma” is a coded word.”

“What were you saying?” My heart stopped beating.

Anya’s eyes widened and her cheeks flushed. She looked at Mikhail waiting at the window.

“I’m not allowed to say…” She then ran out the door.

Stunned, I stood there. “Secret code”? What was meant by that? Did he tell me a lie? What did Mikhail conceal?

I immediately reached for my keys and bag. My day’s plans fell through. I chose to go with them.

I kept my distance and drove behind my husband’s vehicle. I knew right away that he wasn’t going to Diana’s. He chose to stop at a peaceful park on the opposite side of town after turning into an unknown neighborhood.

I parked farther away and observed. Taking Anya and Vanya by the hands, Mikhail exited the vehicle and guided them to a bench under a massive oak tree.

Then I caught sight of her.

A woman with reddish hair in a ponytail, in her early thirties. A girl of about nine years old was standing next to her, and she resembled Anya in every way, including having red hair.

The young girl then rushed to Mikhail. As if he had done it a hundred times, he raised her in his arms. With pleasure, Anya and Vanya joined in. They laughed and played. Mikhail conversed with the woman as though she were a close friend.

I was unable to observe passively. My heart thumped and my knees shook. I exited the vehicle and walked over.

Mikhail’s face went white when he saw me.

“Amina… Why are you here?

I would like to ask you that. Who is she? Who is the girl, by the way?

Vanya and Anya saw me right away.

They yelled, “Mommy!” and rushed to me with the stranger.

Mikhail quickly ushered the children away, saying, “Go play on the swings for a while.”

She turned away. Mikhail combed his hair with his hand.

He gestured to the bench and said softly, “We need to talk.”

The girl was Lilia, and her name was Svetlana. Mikhail started to explain, and I felt every word pierce my heart.

He had a brief affair with Svetlana prior to our meeting. He went into a panic when he learned she was expecting.

“I wasn’t prepared to become a dad. With a guilty look in his eyes, he confessed, “I fled.”

Lilia was raised by Svetlana alone. She never sought assistance or participation. However, they ran into each other at a café a few months ago. Lilia had become inquisitive. In order for the girl to meet her father, Svetlana consented to meet.

“What kept you from telling me? Why didn’t you consult me before taking Anya and Vanya there? My voice trembled as I asked.

“I felt afraid. I was afraid you would go. I’m afraid I’ll destroy our family. I wanted to introduce Lilia to the children gradually. I am aware that I made a mistake. However… I simply had no idea how.

The ground seemed to have fallen away from me. Mikhail told a lie. My choice was taken away by him. However, I felt softer after watching Lilia play with Anya and Vanya.

This had nothing to do with treachery. It told the tale of a young child who was curious about her father.

At home, Mikhail and I spoke. lengthy and challenging. With pain, tears, and accusations. He admitted that his mother, Diana, was aware of everything. When he was actually taking the children to Lilia, she stepped in and agreed to “watch” them.

My mother pleaded with me to tell you. However, I believed I would explain everything in due time.

I asked him to invite Svetlana and Lilia over the following day. I wanted to get to know them well if they were now in our lives.

Lilia was bashful at first and clung to her mother. However, Anya and Vanya embraced her right away, treating her like a longtime friend. In five minutes, they were constructing block towers on the ground.

I sat in the kitchen with Svetlana. First awkward, then surprisingly simple. She was not an adversary. She had done her best as a mother. All she wanted now was for her daughter to start a family.

It’s been months. Indeed, it hasn’t been simple. Yes, it takes time to restore trust. However, Lilia now visits every Saturday, and the children love her.

I’m trying to improve my relationship with Mikhail. I’m learning to forgive, but I still remember. The truth is no longer a secret.

We now go to the park together every Saturday.

No secrets. No codes. Only family.
