25-year-old Brit faces life in Dubai prison – devastated mom speaks out

A 25-year-old British woman could face severe penalties after being arrested in Dubai on suspicion of drug-related offences, according to reports.

Arrest of Antonia Bettridge

Antonia Bettridge, originally from St Helens, moved to Dubai in 2023. She initially relocated to the Gulf city to work as a sports coach and later transitioned into real estate while also training to become a personal trainer.

However, her time in the UAE took an unexpected turn when authorities arrested her on suspicion of possessing narcotics.

According to reporting by the Liverpool Echo, Bettridge has been detained under the United Arab Emirates’ strict drug laws on suspicion of “possession of narcotics with intent to promote.”

Potential penalties under UAE law

Drug laws in the UAE are known to be among the strictest in the world. Legal advisers from Detained in Dubai say that if Bettridge were to be found guilty, the consequences could be extremely serious.

Possible penalties could include:

  • A fine of up to AED 200,000

  • A life prison sentence

Advocates note that authorities in Dubai may pursue charges even without clear evidence of intent to sell or distribute drugs, depending on the circumstances of the case.

Family speaks out

Bettridge’s family has said they are deeply distressed by the situation.

Her mother, who has not been publicly named, described her daughter as someone focused on health and fitness rather than nightlife or partying.

“Antonia’s whole life revolves around fitness and healthy living. She doesn’t live a party lifestyle. She moved to Dubai to build something positive for herself. We are devastated and just want clarity about what has happened.”

The family has also expressed concern that they have not been able to communicate with her directly while she remains in detention.

“With everything happening in the region at the moment, it is incredibly frightening knowing our daughter is in detention and we cannot reach her. We are worried sick. We just want her to be safe and to have the opportunity to prepare her defence properly.”

Concerns about regional instability

Radha Stirling said the broader geopolitical tensions in the Middle East have heightened fears among families with relatives detained in the region.

She noted that when security concerns or instability arise, families often feel increased anxiety about loved ones already facing legal difficulties abroad.

Stirling also emphasized the importance of allowing defendants to prepare their legal defence under fair conditions.

“When there is regional instability or security incidents, families naturally become even more concerned about loved ones who are already in a vulnerable situation.”

She added that her organization hopes the UK government will support Bettridge’s request for bail pending trial, which could allow her to prepare her case outside detention.

Ongoing legal process

The case remains under investigation, and it is not yet clear how the legal proceedings will unfold. For now, Bettridge remains in custody while authorities determine the next steps.

Situations like this often highlight the stark differences between legal systems. Visitors and expatriates in the UAE are frequently warned that even minor infractions involving controlled substances can carry severe penalties under local law.

As the case continues, Bettridge’s family and legal representatives say they are focused on ensuring she has the opportunity to present her defence and receive fair legal treatment.
