Chapter 1: The Trip I Missed
My wife, Clara, took our daughter, Emily, and our son, Matthew, to visit her sister Gwen by the ocean. It was supposed to be a short trip. I was buried in work and promised I would join them next time.
That next time never came.
Two days later, Gwen called and asked whether Clara had changed her plans. She said my family had never reached her house.
The police found Clara’s empty car abandoned on a bridge above a fast-moving river. There were no bags, no witnesses, and no sign of a struggle. Divers searched the water repeatedly, while detectives followed tips that led nowhere.
The prevailing theory was that the car had skidded toward the railing. Investigators believed Clara and the children might have been thrown into the river before the vehicle somehow settled back against the barrier. The current could have carried them miles away.
After two years, they were legally declared dead.
