A Broken Vintage Piano Turned Into A Unique Analog Hybrid of 20 Instruments

An extraordinary feat of musical engineering has successfully revitalized a 100-year-old vintage grand piano, converting the antique piece into a sophisticated analog hybrid. By meticulously integrating 20 different instruments directly into the piano’s frame, the creators have developed a system where these diverse components can all be activated and played using the piano’s original keyboard. This complex transformation effectively turns a single, aged instrument into a functional, self-contained mini-orchestra capable of producing a wide array of sounds.

The creative minds behind this ambitious project are the members of the Ukrainian indie rock band Brunettes Shoot Blondes. Based in Kiev and established in 2010, the group utilized this modified piano to perform their original song, “Houston.” The invention serves as a testament to their innovative approach to musical arrangement, allowing them to produce complex, layered sounds through a single, unified interface that challenges traditional performance boundaries.

This project follows the band’s previous rise to international prominence. In September 2014, the group achieved significant viral success with an animated music video for their track “Knock Knock.” That particular production, which creatively incorporated various Apple devices, resonated with audiences globally and has since accumulated more than 26 million views on YouTube. This earlier success helped cement the band’s reputation for combining high-concept visual artistry with their original musical compositions.
