Bee Gees’ Barry Gibb and niece Samantha sing for her late dad in beautiful duet

Across several decades, brothers Barry, Robin and Maurice Gibb achieved sustained chart success as the Bee Gees. Musical ability also extended to Maurice’s daughter, Samantha Gibb. At age 34, she appeared with her uncle Barry to perform a duet centered on the Bee Gees ballad “How Can You Mend a Broken Heart.”

The performance took place at Philadelphia’s Wells Fargo Centre on May 19, 2014. Before singing, Barry and Samantha embraced onstage. Barry told those attending that they had chosen a song both of them favored and that Maurice had especially liked it as well. He then expressed their hope that the listeners would enjoy the selection.

Their rendition served as a tribute to Maurice, the Bee Gees’ bassist and Samantha’s late father. Maurice died suddenly at 53 on January 12, 2003. He had suffered cardiac arrest after undergoing an operation for a twisted intestine.

Samantha opened the performance with “The End of the World,” a Skeeter Davis hit about the distress of being without a loved one. She transformed the original country-pop vocal by giving it an R&B treatment. Barry entered afterward, guiding the duet from that song into “How Can You Mend a Broken Heart,” whose lyrics address a related subject.
