After expressing her disdain for Donald Trump through her song “Don’t Lie to Me,” Barbra Streisand has once again criticized the former president, now stating that if Trump, the Republican front-runner for 2024, is re-elected, she plans to leave the United States.
Referring to Trump, who faces multiple indictments, as “so stupid” and “ill-informed,” Streisand told Stephen Colbert, “I can’t live in this country if he becomes president.”
This isn’t the first time Streisand has threatened to leave the country, nor is she alone among celebrities who made similar vows after Trump’s win in 2016. However, most did not follow through on their plans.
At 81, Streisand didn’t hesitate to mock Trump, sarcastically saying, “Yes, Mr. Trump, let’s make America great again. But first, get one thing straight: America was great – before you were elected.”
Streisand, a long-time supporter of the Democratic party, has made her dislike for Trump clear, even calling him “the Liar in Chief” and “the Groper in Chief.” In 2018, she released her 36th album, Walls, which was directly influenced by Trump’s presidency.
In an interview with the Associated Press, she explained that the album reflected her sadness and heartbreak over the state of the country under Trump’s leadership. Streisand voiced her concern about Trump’s impact on American democracy, saying, “I think we’re in a fight… We’re in a war for the soul of America.”
The Grammy-nominated album includes the track “Don’t Lie to Me,” which Streisand said was inspired by the constant stream of misinformation during Trump’s presidency. She added, “I can’t stand being lied to, and I don’t think the country should be lied to either,” followed by a joke about how Trump could lie without guilt, quipping, “clearly he’s not Jewish.”
In her 2023 memoir My Name is Barbra, Streisand reflected on the relationship between politics and art, stating that she feels compelled to speak out. She questioned why people get upset when artists express their political views, asserting that artists serve as “a country’s conscience” by reflecting the times and giving voice to those who can’t speak for themselves. She added, “That’s why art is the enemy of tyrants and dictators.”
Streisand’s powerful voice may not have influenced the outcome of the 2016 election, but she wasn’t the only celebrity to consider leaving the U.S. if Trump took office. In an interview with Australia’s 60 Minutes, Streisand joked that she’d move to either Australia or Canada if Trump won.
Other celebrities also voiced similar sentiments. Comedian George Lopez humorously remarked that if Trump won, he wouldn’t have to worry about immigration, as everyone would return to Mexico. Chelsea Handler, who had planned to leave, changed her mind after Trump’s victory, realizing her platform was more important than ever. Meanwhile, Jon Stewart quipped that he’d consider moving to another planet, and Cher famously tweeted that she’d relocate to Jupiter if Trump were elected.
Following Trump’s presidency, Streisand expressed optimism about the direction of the country under President Joe Biden. In a 2021 interview, she praised Biden’s compassion, honesty, and integrity, stating, “I love his love of facts, not fiction.”
In an essay for Variety, Streisand criticized Trump’s four years in office, claiming that he had dragged the country “into the mud” with his behavior. She emphasized the need to restore truth and dignity in the U.S., saying, “Only then will America be great again.”
As the 2024 election approaches, Streisand continues to voice her concerns about Trump’s potential return to power. In a conversation with Stephen Colbert, she reiterated her intention to leave the country if Trump wins again, suggesting England as her likely destination.
Streisand described Trump as someone who consistently refuses to take responsibility for his actions, blaming others when he is at fault. She pointed out that despite being impeached, Trump has avoided accountability thanks to his Republican allies.
Her final message calls for a renewed America—one free from pollution, insults, and revenge, and where truth reigns once more. According to Streisand, only then can America truly be great again.
If Streisand does reconsider Canada as her potential refuge, she may need to act fast, as there are already calls from some Republicans to build a wall along the Canadian border.
