Family of American Airlines pilot reveals heartbreaking final conversation before the plane crashed

Uncle John Lane had a warm memory of American Airlines pilot Jonathan Campos, one of the 67 people who perished in the January 29 tragic collision between flight 5342 and a U.S. military helicopter.

Before the crash, Jonathan was excited about a family cruise and had a happy 10-minute phone chat with Lane as he boarded the aircraft. Jonathan had put a lot of effort into flying bigger aircraft because he had always wanted to be a pilot. His uncle, who described Jonathan as a “good kid” who had done well in life, was both saddened and proud.

Three crew members were in the helicopter and 64 passengers and four crew members were on the American Airlines flight when the crash happened close to Washington, D.C. The incident is being looked into by the National Transportation Safety Board.
