My Mom Quit Babysitting to Take Dance Lessons—Now I Feel Betrayed! But Is She Really the One in the Wrong?

I am beyond frustrated. My mom has always watched my kids — it’s just what she does. And now, all of a sudden, she’s decided that she’s “too busy” because she wants to prance around in some dance class and have brunch with her friends instead of being where she’s actually needed.

My wife and I work full-time and count on her to help with the kids, especially the younger ones. Now she’s just throwing that responsibility away because she wants to “enjoy life?” What about our life? Where am I supposed to find the money for a babysitter? She’s retired — she has nothing else to do — so why is she acting like she gets to just quit being a grandmother whenever she feels like it?

She raised me, and now it’s her job to help me raise my kids. That’s how family works. I don’t understand how she can act this way.

Hi everyone, Mom here. I wasn’t planning to respond, but here we are.

I love my family, and I love my grandkids. But let’s get one thing straight — I am not a full-time, unpaid babysitter. I’ve spent decades raising my own children, and now that I finally have time to enjoy life, I refuse to spend my golden years stuck at home changing diapers and cleaning up snack crumbs.

I gave my son everything I had — love, support, and yes, plenty of free babysitting over the years. But I am 71 years old. My knees ache, my patience is thinner than it used to be, but believe me, I’d rather push through a waltz than sit through Paw Patrol.

I’m not abandoning my family; I’m just choosing to live a little while I still can. And believe it or not, dancing and brunch aren’t reckless acts of rebellion — they’re just me finally having some fun.

I’ll always be here when it truly matters, but if my son thinks I owe him free childcare for life, maybe he needs some lessons — on gratitude. 😊
