Meg has been my wife for more than five years, and my name is Jake. Together, we have overcome many obstacles, especially infertility. Meg’s best friend Bethany was among the friends we recently had dinner with. I went back to get my phone after we left the restaurant after realizing I had left it there. I heard Bethany make fun of Meg at that point, saying, “She is really pitiful! What is she wishing for? I feel like Jake will crawl over to me as soon as I wink at him. At least I could have a healthy child for him.
I started flirting with Bethany to give the impression that I was interested in her because I was determined to teach her a lesson. I became more focused and even proposed that we get coffee together. I pretended to be enthralled with her during our meeting. As I watched her flush, I remarked, “You know, Bethany, I’ve been thinking about you a lot lately.”
I eventually asked her to a formal dinner so we could “talk about our relationship.” Bethany was excited and dressed up, but she was surprised by what happened next. “Remember what you said about Meg at the restaurant that night, Bethany? I heard it all. Her face went white. In private, you ridiculed my wife. Did you really think your smug, crafty act would fool me?
When Bethany realized she had been duped, she became enraged. “You took advantage of me?” she yelled. I answered, “Damn right, I did.” “Everyone will now know your true identity. You won’t see Meg ever again. I’ll make sure of it. Bethany stormed out, humiliated and furious.
Meg, who was aware of the plan, inquired about its progress when she got home. I gave her a hug and remarked, “Better than I expected.” “She will no longer cause us any trouble.” As soon as word got out about Bethany’s dishonesty, her reputation rapidly declined. As a result of this experience, Meg and I became even more dependable and protective of one another.
