Chapter 10: Nina’s Recording
Martin turned toward the directors.
“She’s bitter. She was terminated this morning. Of course she’s trying to retaliate.”
Before anyone could answer, the boardroom phone rang.
The general counsel pressed the speaker button.
Nina’s trembling voice filled the room.
“Clara? I found the recording.”
Martin went rigid.
I looked at him.
“Put it through, Nina.”
A moment later, Martin’s voice came from the speaker, low and smug.
“Once Clara is gone, there’s nobody left who understands the old contracts. We move fast, force the vote, and by the time Robert realizes what happened, the sale is already signed.”
Another man laughed.
“And the workers?”
Martin’s answer came without hesitation.
“Collateral damage. Christmas layoffs look bad, but investors forget fast.”
No one in the boardroom moved.
I watched Robert close his eyes.
Not in confusion.
In shame.
Martin whispered, “That was private.”
