Chapter 6: The Boardroom Panic
By 10:19, my second phone rang.
Only five people had that number.
I answered without checking the screen.
“Clara,” said Robert Hale, the CEO, his voice strained. “Where are you?”
“In the parking lot.”
“Please come back upstairs.”
I glanced at the cardboard box beside me.
“I’m no longer employed there, Robert. Your son-in-law was very clear.”
He exhaled sharply.
“Martin acted without authority.”
“No,” I said. “Martin acted with arrogance. There is a difference.”
For a moment, he said nothing.
Then, lower, “He didn’t know.”
“That I was Arthur Tennant’s granddaughter?”
Robert swallowed audibly.
“That you were trust protector.”
I looked up at the executive floor.
Behind the tinted windows, people were probably moving like ants inside a kicked hill.
