When I returned to the lobby, security did not escort me this time.
They stepped aside.
One of them even pressed the elevator button for me.
By the time the doors opened on the top floor, the calm corporate polish had cracked.
Assistants whispered into phones.
Legal staff hurried past with folders.
Martin stood outside the boardroom, pale and sweating through his expensive shirt.
The moment he saw me, his face turned ghost-white.
Not because he suddenly respected me.
Because he had finally learned my maiden name.
“Clara,” he said, forcing a smile. “There’s been a misunderstanding.”
I walked past him.
“No, Martin. For the first time today, everyone understands perfectly.”
Inside the boardroom, the directors sat frozen around the long table.
At the far end, a presentation slide still glowed on the screen.
