Chapter 14: The Day She Returned
Three weeks later, my mother came to the house.
She stood on the porch wearing pearls, a cream coat, and the wounded expression she used whenever she wanted the world to see her as the victim.
I opened the door but did not let her inside.
Her eyes flicked past me toward the hallway.
“I want to see my grandson.”
“No.”
The word surprised both of us with how simple it sounded.
Her mouth tightened.
“You don’t mean that.”
“I do.”
“Ethan, she is turning you against me.”
I stepped onto the porch and closed the door behind me.
“No. You did that.”
For once, she had no immediate answer.
“You hurt my wife when she was vulnerable. You endangered my son. You lied to me for three days.”
Her face twisted.
“I was helping.”
“Helping would have sounded like love,” I said. “What you gave her sounded like punishment.”
Then I handed her the attorney’s letter.
