Chapter 6: Lazy
I walked toward her slowly.
“What happened?”
My mother lifted her chin.
“Your wife refused to listen. I told her to stop being dramatic, but she kept complaining. New mothers today are so weak.”
I stared at her.
“She was three days postpartum.”
“Women have babies every day, Ethan.”
Her voice lowered into that familiar cutting tone I had heard all my life.
“If taking care of a baby is so difficult for her, maybe she never should have become a mother.”
The words seemed to echo down the corridor.
Behind us, a doctor stepped out of Hannah’s room.
He had gray hair, tired eyes, and the controlled expression of a man trying very hard not to show anger.
“Mr. Miller?” he asked.
I turned instantly.
“Yes.”
“Your wife is conscious. But before you go in, I need to ask you something.”
My mother stiffened beside me.
The doctor’s eyes moved to her.
