Michael Jackson And Freddie Mercury Sing “There Must Be More to Life Than This”

The partnership between Queen’s legendary frontman Freddie Mercury and the King of Pop, Michael Jackson, remains one of the most intriguing collaborations in music history. Their connection began in Los Angeles, where a 25-year-old Jackson was spotted backstage at a Queen concert. Having expressed a deep admiration for Mercury’s work, Jackson attended several of the band’s performances before finally being introduced to Mercury and his bandmates, Brian May, Roger Taylor, and John Deacon.

Over the next three to four years, the two icons cultivated a genuine friendship rooted in their shared passion for music and mutual respect for one another’s distinct talents. Despite their vastly different personal styles and public personas, Mercury held Jackson in high regard, often referring to him as his “little brother” during interviews. By 1983, this professional rapport led them to begin recording demo tracks together at Jackson’s private home studio. Among the three songs they focused on was “There Must Be More to Life Than This,” a composition Mercury had originally penned for Queen’s 1982 studio album, Hot Space.

While both artists acknowledged the high quality of the material they were producing, the project struggled to move forward. Mercury later noted that time constraints were a significant factor in the songs remaining unreleased. However, according to Queen’s manager, Jim “Miami” Beach, there were deeper complications hindering the sessions. Mercury reportedly became increasingly uncomfortable with the environment in Jackson’s studio, specifically citing the presence of a pet llama that was frequently brought into the workspace. This eccentricity, combined with reported friction regarding Mercury’s use of cocaine during their time together, created an untenable situation. Ultimately, the creative and personal clashes became too great, and the recording sessions were abandoned.
