Eric Clapton & Luciano Pavarotti’s INSANE “Holy Mother” Duet with East London Gospel Choir

In 1986, Eric Clapton released his album August, which featured a poignant, gospel-infused ballad titled “Holy Mother.” While the song initially remained a deep cut within his extensive discography, a remarkable live performance a decade later transformed it into a globally recognized anthem. During a 1996 concert, Clapton joined forces with the legendary operatic tenor Luciano Pavarotti and the East London Gospel Choir, creating a powerful rendition that has since garnered millions of views and solidified the track’s place in the public consciousness, far exceeding the reach of the song’s original studio release.

At the time of this performance, Clapton was 51 years old. He began the song alone, maintaining the clarity and intimacy of the original recording, supported by the gentle, rhythmic backing of the East London Gospel Choir. As the second verse commenced, the atmosphere shifted dramatically when Pavarotti, then 61, introduced his signature operatic power. The contrast between Clapton’s blues-rooted rock style and the Italian tenor’s commanding, lush vocal delivery initially provided a jarring juxtaposition. However, as the performance progressed, the two artists found a profound sense of musical unity. The arrangement reached a climax as Clapton delivered a virtuosic guitar solo that soared over the choir’s rich harmonies, leaving even Pavarotti visibly moved by the collaborative result achieved on that stage.

Both performers brought immense, albeit different, legacies to the stage. Luciano Pavarotti, a native of Modena, Italy, had transcended the traditional boundaries of opera to achieve unprecedented mainstream fame. His status as a global icon was cemented in 1990 through his participation in The Three Tenors during the FIFA World Cup and the record-breaking success of his album The Essential Pavarotti, which became the first classical release to top the UK charts, effectively setting his legacy in stone.
