Tasha owned a small boutique hotel and had long offered me a room whenever I needed space. When I asked whether her suite was available, she promised flowers, champagne, and chocolate before I could change my mind.

I packed a midnight-blue dress, perfume, a neglected book, and a black swimsuit. Closing that suitcase did not feel like abandoning my marriage. It felt like refusing to disappear inside it.

The suite was quiet, sunlit, and prepared with a handwritten note from Tasha reminding me that courage could look like rest. I ordered dinner, soaked in the deep bathtub, and listened to the jazz my mother had loved. Eric’s messages kept arriving, but I did not answer that night.

The following morning, I sent him one photograph of myself holding coffee, with sunlight filling the window behind me. I wrote that since he had wanted family time, I was giving him plenty of it. Then I turned off my phone and ordered pancakes.

Eric appeared that evening looking exhausted. I let him inside, but I remained near the window while he sat on the edge of the bed.

“I messed up,” he said.

He admitted Judith had pushed for the gathering and that he had agreed because he feared an argument with her. He hoped I would accept the surprise once everyone was seated.

“You gambled with my trust to purchase your mother’s peace,” I told him. “I won’t live like that.”

Then I took an envelope from my bag. Inside were the names of three marriage therapists.
