I entered Mr. Thompson’s office hoping he might finally discuss the raise I had not received in six years. Instead, he pushed termination papers toward me. He said my refrigerator had disturbed workplace harmony and made my coworkers uncomfortable.

I reminded him that taking food without permission was stealing, not sharing. I explained that Matilda could barely grip a spoon some mornings, yet still made my lunch because it was one piece of normal life her illness had not taken. He suggested vending-machine snacks. When I listed my spotless record and decades of service, his expression hardened.

“The job needs speed and energy,” he said. “We need someone younger.”

Security escorted me out while I carried the little refrigerator, my untouched lunch still inside. Danny lowered his eyes. Lisa looked pale. Others watched through the windows as though my departure were just another shift change.

I sat in our driveway for 20 minutes before going inside. Matilda saw my face and immediately set aside her crossword. When I told her why I had been fired, she rose so quickly that her chair toppled. Her shock turned to fury, then fear. How would we pay for her treatments? Who would hire me at 60?

We called our adult daughters, Claire and Beth. Both were livid, but beneath their anger I heard the same worry tightening their voices. Claire finally asked me to read every word of the termination papers. When I reached Mr. Thompson’s claim that there had been “multiple documented complaints,” she interrupted me. “Dad, were any of those complaints ever shown to you?” I looked at Matilda. They had not.
