Lionel Richie and Kenny Rogers Sing ‘Lady’ In Heartwarming Duet
Kenny Rogers appeared at Lionel Richie And Friends In Concert in 2012 to honor his friend, but his account of their first meeting led to an unexpected joint performance. Rogers told the audience that Richie had originally brought him “Lady” after The Commodores declined the song. He also joked about the peculiar sales strategy of introducing a composition by pointing out that another act had already rejected it.
Rogers nevertheless recorded “Lady,” which was released in 1980 and topped the charts. It became one of the biggest hits of his career and helped Richie as he began establishing himself as a solo artist. Their work on the song also marked the beginning of a friendship that continued while each musician pursued a highly successful career of his own.
Once Rogers finished relating the song’s history at the 2012 concert, he invited Richie to come forward from his seat in the crowd. The request surprised the audience, whose members cheered as Richie made his way onto the stage. Richie greeted Rogers by placing an arm around him and kissing him on the cheek, then joined him for “Lady.” They remained near each other and took turns singing the verses as cheers continued during the number.
