When George Harrison, Mick Jagger & Bruce Springsteen Joined an All-Star Crowd for an Incredible ‘I Saw Her Standing There’
George Harrison, Mick Jagger and Bruce Springsteen shared the microphone for “I Saw Her Standing There” on January 20, 1988. Their performance came at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York during the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame’s third yearly induction dinner, where the Beatles were admitted in the performer category.
Earlier, Jagger had delivered an affectionate and witty induction address for his longtime peers. The ceremony concluded with the customary jam featuring stars from across the evening. Ballroom footage shows Harrison, Jagger and Springsteen taking different verses of the Beatles’ 1963 song during the crowded finale.
Although major music figures surrounded them, the three frontmen approached the number with raw drive rather than the finish of a formal showcase. Their voices joined in a performance whose garage-band looseness contrasted with the concentration of celebrated musicians filling the stage.
Paul Shaffer directed the closing set. The Washington Post identified a supporting lineup that included guitarists Neil Young, Nile Rodgers and Jeff Beck, as well as Creedence Clearwater Revival founder John Fogerty. Billy Joel participated too, and singers connected with the Platters and the Beach Boys joined the chorus. The assembled artists paid tribute to early rock and roll.
