Buffalo Springfield existed for just a few years, while its music contributed to the development of folk-rock and early country-rock. Following the band’s dissolution, members moved into other groups, among them Poco and Crosby, Stills & Nash.
Those later ties were evident at the induction dinner because Buffalo Springfield and Crosby, Stills & Nash were members of the same Hall of Fame class. Receiving recognition through both acts made Stills the first musician to be inducted twice during a single evening.
Petty’s guest spot occurred five years before Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers received their own Hall induction in 2002. The Hall retained the Buffalo Springfield performance in its archive and uploaded the footage to YouTube on May 25, 2020.
The recording reached fresh viewers after its online release, with listeners responding favorably to the unusual combination of performers. One commenter rearranged their names into “Crosby, Stills, Nash, Palmer, and Petty” and called the lineup another supergroup at its finest. The video documents all five musicians sharing the stage for “For What It’s Worth.”
