Riley’s life was a delicate balancing act — one that had become even more complicated after she had her son, Roy. At 32, she was managing everything on her own, ever since her ex walked out when she was pregnant. While she loved Roy with all her heart, there were days when Riley longed for something more—someone to share her life with, someone who could love her as deeply as she loved her son.
But every time she met someone new, the outcome was always the same. As soon as they found out about Roy, they pulled away. Riley was becoming disheartened, wondering if she’d ever find love again. With Mitchell, however, it felt different. He seemed kind, attentive, and genuinely interested. The only problem? She was terrified of scaring him off by mentioning Roy too soon.
Riley glanced down at her son, Roy, clutching his favorite toy tightly in his arms. He wasn’t happy about being dropped off at Kyle’s house for the night. Riley’s heart ached as she crouched down to his level, brushing his hair back gently.
“It’s just for one night, Roy,” she said, forcing a smile. “You’ll have so much fun with Kyle. You two will watch movies and play games. I’ll pick you up in the morning, okay?”
Roy didn’t seem convinced, his face softening but still uncertain. “But what if I don’t want to sleep there?”
Riley’s heart broke at the look in his eyes, but she knew she needed this night to focus on herself, to see if Mitchell could be the future she had been longing for. “You’ll be fine,” she reassured him, though she felt anything but sure. “And tomorrow we’ll do something fun.”
With a sigh, Riley watched Roy head inside Kyle’s house, his small figure walking slowly up the steps. The pang in her chest was sharp, but she pushed it away. This was for both of them—if things went well with Mitchell, they might finally be able to build a better life.
As she climbed into the taxi, Riley exhaled deeply, determined to focus on the evening ahead.
When she arrived at the restaurant, Mitchell was already waiting, looking handsome in a sharp suit. He greeted her with a warm, inviting smile, and Riley felt a flutter of hope. The nerves kicked in, but she had put effort into her appearance tonight—her favorite dress, just enough makeup, and a pair of heels that made her feel confident.
They exchanged polite pleasantries, but the conversation felt awkward at first, neither of them knowing what to say. Then, Mitchell broke the ice.
“So, do you think this menu is a bit too… fancy?” He gestured at the extensive salad options. “I mean, I’ve never seen so many types of lettuce.”
Riley laughed, relieved. “I know, right? Six different kinds of lettuce. Who knew?”
The conversation flowed from there. They talked about their favorite foods, funny stories from work, and small moments from their pasts. For the first time in a while, Riley felt herself relaxing. She laughed more than she had in months, and the evening started to feel enjoyable—until she realized that she hadn’t told Mitchell about Roy yet. The thought hung in the air between them, making her stomach twist with anxiety.
After dinner, as they stepped outside for a walk, Riley decided to test the waters.
“So, Mitchell,” she began, trying to sound casual, “what do you think about kids?”
The change in Mitchell’s expression was immediate—he hesitated, and the unease was palpable. He quickly changed the subject, and Riley’s heart sank. She could feel the tension growing between them.
Before she could figure out how to continue, her phone buzzed in her pocket. It was Kyle.
“Kyle? Is everything okay?” Riley asked, her voice laced with worry.
“Kyle called,” Kyle’s voice trembled. “Roy fell really bad, and he won’t stop crying. You need to come get him.”
Riley’s heart leapt in her chest. Without hesitation, she turned to Mitchell. “Mitchell, I need to tell you something. I have an 8-year-old son, Roy. I didn’t tell you earlier because I was afraid it would scare you away. I’m so sorry I lied.”
Mitchell looked at her, surprised but not upset. He smiled gently. “It’s okay. Honestly, I’ve been hiding something too.”
Riley blinked, caught off guard. “What do you mean?”
“I have a twelve-year-old daughter,” Mitchell confessed. “I didn’t mention her because I was afraid of how you’d react too.”
Relief washed over Riley. “You do?” she asked, her voice softening.
Mitchell nodded. “Yeah, and I get it. It’s tough, balancing everything. Being a parent is hard, and dating is even harder when you’re juggling it all.”
Riley couldn’t believe the weight lifting from her chest. “I understand,” she said, her voice barely above a whisper. “Thank you for understanding.”
Mitchell smiled and offered his support. “Why don’t I come with you? We can go get Roy together. I’d like to meet him.”
Tears of gratitude filled Riley’s eyes. “You’d do that?”
“Of course,” Mitchell said, his expression calm and reassuring. “I know how important he is to you. Let’s make sure he’s okay.”
Together, they rushed to Kyle’s house. When they arrived, they found Roy sitting on the floor, safe and sound, playing video games. It turned out he had just missed his mom and wanted her to come back. The relief that flooded through Riley was overwhelming.
As she knelt to hug her son, she whispered, “Roy, you don’t have to make up stories to see me. I’ll always come back for you, no matter what.”
Mitchell chuckled softly behind her, and Riley couldn’t help but smile. The tension had melted away, and the warmth of the moment settled around them.
On the drive home, Riley couldn’t help but laugh at the craziness of the night. As she glanced at Roy, happily chattering in the backseat, and at Mitchell, who was smiling beside her, she felt a glimmer of hope.
“How about our next date?” Mitchell asked, his eyes twinkling. “We bring the kids.”
Riley smiled, feeling lighthearted for the first time in a long while. “I’d like that.”
And for the first time, she felt like maybe, just maybe, she had found the love she’d been searching for.
