Netflix movie features real-life sex scene between two actors originally banned for being too extreme

A film once considered too controversial for theaters in its own country has found a new audience online. Now available on Netflix in some regions, the underground movie Gandu is again drawing attention—and debate—because of one scene that many viewers still find shocking.

A Film That Divided Audiences

Gandu was directed by Indian filmmaker Qaushiq Mukherjee and first premiered in 2010. From the beginning, the movie stood apart from conventional cinema. Shot in gritty black-and-white and set against the underground music scene, the story follows a rebellious young rapper trying to escape the frustrations of his life.

The main character secretly steals money from his mother’s partner while immersing himself in music, drugs, and reckless adventures. The film’s raw style and chaotic storytelling reflect the character’s anger and disillusionment.

But while the plot itself explores themes of youth rebellion and identity, it wasn’t the storyline that sparked the most attention.

The Scene That Sparked Global Debate

Much of the controversy surrounding the film centers on a scene involving its two lead actors, Anubrata Basu and Rii Sen. In the scene, the actors appear to engage in unsimulated intimacy on camera—something extremely rare in narrative filmmaking.

According to director Qaushiq Mukherjee, the performers were close friends and mutually agreed to the scene. He later explained that both actors were fully aware of the artistic direction and chose to commit to the moment during filming.

Nevertheless, the reaction was immediate and intense.

When the film premiered at festivals, some audience members reportedly walked out of screenings. The explicit nature of the scene made it difficult for the movie to find traditional distribution in India, where censorship standards for theatrical releases are stricter.

Banned at Home, Celebrated Abroad

In India, the film struggled to secure a theatrical release due to concerns about its explicit content. For years, it remained largely confined to international festival circuits and underground screenings.

Despite the controversy, some critics praised its bold artistic style.

Film industry publication Variety described the movie in 2011 as “a high-energy example of a rarefied genre,” noting that the film’s intense pacing and raw visual style keep viewers captivated from start to finish.

Supporters argue that the film pushes boundaries intentionally, reflecting the chaotic inner world of its protagonist and the rebellious energy of underground culture.

Others, however, believe it crosses a line between artistic expression and unnecessary shock value.

Streaming Brings the Debate Back

With Gandu now appearing on Netflix in certain regions, the discussion has resurfaced. Modern streaming platforms often give controversial or previously banned films a second life, allowing new audiences to decide for themselves whether the work is daring, provocative, or simply too extreme.

Online viewers remain divided. Some praise the film’s fearless approach to storytelling and its unconventional aesthetic. Others find its explicit moments uncomfortable or unnecessary.

What is clear is that the film continues to spark conversation more than a decade after its original release.

And as streaming platforms bring more unconventional cinema to global audiences, debates like this one—about art, boundaries, and creative freedom—are unlikely to fade anytime soon.
