A$AP Rocky’s Six-Word Message to Jury After Unexpected Verdict in Shooting Trial

The courtroom was thick with tension as the verdict was announced. A$AP Rocky, his face a mixture of exhaustion and anticipation, stood surrounded by his loved ones. His longtime girlfriend, Rihanna, sat nearby, her expression unreadable, yet unwavering in support. When the words “not guilty” echoed through the room, the weight of four years of legal battles seemed to lift in an instant.

“Thank y’all for saving my life,” Rocky said, his voice raw with emotion. He turned to the jurors, his gratitude palpable. “Thank you. Thank y’all. You’re making the right decision.”

It was the end of a turbulent journey—one that began on a Hollywood sidewalk in November 2021, where a gunshot would set off years of legal strife between Rocky, born Rakim Mayers, and his former childhood friend, Terell “A$AP Relli” Ephron.

Once inseparable, their friendship had eroded over time, strained by financial disputes and personal betrayals within their hip-hop collective, A$AP Mob. Relli claimed that Rocky, after reaching superstardom, had turned his back on the group that helped build his career. Their simmering tensions exploded that fateful night when, according to Relli, Rocky pulled a gun and fired, grazing his hand.

The incident led to felony assault charges against Rocky in August 2022. But as the case unfolded, so did the deep fractures within A$AP Mob. Relli testified about broken promises, unpaid debts, and lingering resentment. He painted a picture of Rocky as a man who had risen to fame at the expense of those who once stood by him.

During the trial, the prosecution presented a grainy video and Relli’s own text messages, including one sent to Rocky an hour after the shooting: “U try killing me.” Rocky, however, dismissed the claim. “Rell, [expletive] u talkin bout?? Why u tellin ppl I shot at u,” he allegedly responded.

Rocky’s legal team, led by defense attorney Joe Tacopina, argued that the case was built on lies and financial motives. They pointed to a settlement request filed just a day after Rocky’s arrest, implying that Relli was more interested in a payout than justice. “This entire case has been a shakedown,” Tacopina asserted.

As the trial progressed, delays pushed proceedings back multiple times. At one point, Rocky’s court date was postponed to accommodate his performance at Rolling Loud Thailand 2024, as well as a benefit concert in Bangkok. With every delay, the media frenzy grew, and speculation swirled over whether Rihanna, the mother of Rocky’s two children, would attend the trial.

“If she wants to come, she can come,” Judge Mark Arnold said in October, making it clear that Rocky would receive no special treatment.

When the trial finally commenced on January 21, 2025, Rihanna was there. She sat quietly in the courtroom as jury selection began and later listened as Relli took the stand as the prosecution’s key witness. Despite the intense media coverage, Rocky chose not to testify in his own defense.

A central question in the trial was the weapon itself—never recovered, never found. Prosecutors insisted it was real, while Rocky’s attorneys argued it was nothing more than a “prop gun” used for personal protection. Without physical evidence, the case rested on credibility, and after weeks of testimony, the jury was left to decide.

On February 18, 2025, after days of deliberation, they returned with their verdict: not guilty.

As the words were spoken, the courtroom erupted. Rocky turned to his attorneys, embracing them one by one. Then he found Rihanna, who had been by his side through it all. They held each other tightly, the relief evident in their embrace.

Outside the courthouse, Rocky addressed the media for the first time since the trial began. “I feel blessed,” he said, his voice steady but emotional. “This whole thing has been overwhelming, but I knew the truth would come out.”

Rihanna later shared her own reaction on Instagram: “The glory belongs to God and God alone! Thankful, humbled by His mercy!”

In hindsight, Rocky’s decision to reject a plea deal that would have landed him in jail for 180 days proved to be the right one. Had he been convicted, he could have faced up to 24 years in prison. Instead, he walked out a free man.

This wasn’t the first time Rocky had faced legal troubles. In 2019, he spent nearly a month in a Swedish jail after a street altercation in Stockholm, a case that made international headlines and even drew intervention attempts from then-President Donald Trump. Though he was found guilty of assault, he avoided further jail time with a suspended sentence.

Now, with another legal battle behind him, Rocky can focus on the future. He is no longer a man fighting for his freedom—he is an artist, a father, and a partner, ready to step back into the world without the weight of the past hanging over him.

For the first time in years, A$AP Rocky is free to move forward. And this time, he’s determined to do it on his own terms.
