The Oscars honored Gene Hackman. Days after the two-time Academy Award winner’s death, his wife and dog were discovered dead in their New Mexico home on Sunday night.
Actor Morgan Freeman wrote of Hackman, “Our community lost a giant and I lost a dear friend,” prior to an In Memoriam video honoring actors and others who had passed away within the previous year.
Hackman and Freeman costarred in the movies “Unforgiven” and “Under Suspicion.”
“Like everyone who ever shared a scene with him, I learned he was a generous performer and a man whose gifts elevated everyone’s work,” said Freeman.
The deaths of Hackman, 95, and his wife, Betsy Arakawa, 65, raise a number of unanswered questions. Here’s what investigators have told us.
How did Betsy Arakawa and Gene Hackman pass away?
Sheriff Adan Mendoza of Santa Fe County stated on Friday that the toxicology reports and autopsy results are still pending.
According to him, tests for carbon monoxide poisoning came back negative for Hackman and Arakawa. Additionally, when their bodies were discovered, the sheriff’s office reported that no evidence of blunt force trauma was discovered.
What was the duration of the deaths of Arakawa and Hackman?
Mendoza said Friday that Hackman’s pacemaker last recorded an event on February 17, nine days prior to the bodies being discovered. That might have been Hackman’s last day, the sheriff said.
According to a search warrant issued the day Arakawa and Hackman’s bodies were discovered, they displayed mummification of the hands and feet, bloating in the face, and other signs of decomposition. According to the National Library of Medicine, mummification is a natural process that occurs when the skin dries out and preserves a body after death.
Arakawa and Hackman were located where?
When deputies arrived at the residence at approximately 1:45 p.m. local time on February 26, they discovered Hackman and Arakawa dead in their home outside of Santa Fe, New Mexico.
Hackman was discovered in what is thought to be the mudroom of the house. According to the search warrant, he seemed to have fallen unexpectedly. He was discovered with slippers, a long-sleeved T-shirt, and sweatpants on.
The warrant states that Arakawa was discovered in a bathroom close to the house’s front door. The restroom door was opened.
Arakawa, dressed in sweatpants and a sweatshirt, lay on the ground. According to the warrant, a countertop near Arakawa had an open orange prescription bottle and a few pills scattered on it. Additionally, a space heater was spotted close to Arakawa’s head.
The dog of Hackman and Arakawa was also discovered dead.
According to the warrant, one of Hackman and Arakawa’s dogs was discovered dead in the bathroom closet where Arakawa’s body was found. According to Mendoza, the dog was kept in a crate or kennel.
Additionally, the cause of death for the dog is still unknown.
According to the warrant, two more dogs were discovered on the property alive when deputies got there.
No overt indications of foul play
According to the warrant, deputies discovered Hackman and Arakawa’s home’s door “unsecured and opened.” According to the sheriff’s office, they were first called to the house after a person who had come to perform maintenance did not get a response and became worried.
According to deputies, there were no indications of forced entry or that the house had been searched.
No indications of a leak of carbon monoxide
According to deputies, there were no overt indications of a gas leak at the residence.
According to the search warrant, tests performed at the scene by the New Mexico Gas Company and Santa Fe Fire Department personnel revealed no signs of a carbon monoxide leak or pipe issues.
In a Tuesday update, the sheriff’s office stated that the gas company had issued five “red tags.” According to the office, one was for “a minuscule leak,” or 0.33% gas in the air, at a stove burner. This is not a fatal amount. The other tags were for infractions unrelated to carbon monoxide or gas leaks.
Each year, hundreds of people are killed by the colorless, odorless gas known as carbon monoxide.
Investigators attempt to establish a timeline.
Investigators were trying to gain access to the two cellphones that were taken as evidence from Hackman and Arakawa’s residence.
“We’ll be analyzing cell phone data — phone calls, text messages, events, photos in the cell phone — to try to piece a timeline together,” Mendoza said on Friday.
According to Mendoza, there is no known surveillance footage of the house either inside or outside.
