12 Stories of Strangers Whose Actions Left a Lasting Mark

On a tram, I was eight months pregnant. A woman entered carrying a big bag and a baby. She appeared exhausted. I gave her my seat since no one else moved. She looked at me in an odd way.
She slipped something wet into my bag after getting off. When I took it out, I felt sick because this woman had given me a chewed and cracked pacifier with a note folded around it. “Don’t be a hero,” the note said. Nobody applauds when mothers break up.
I was astounded. I wasn’t sure if I should be warned or offended. Instead of seeing compassion, she saw another woman on her path to burnout.
I came to the realization that not all mothers aspire to be viewed as strong on that day. Some people only wish to live. I also made a promise to myself that I wouldn’t try to prove that I could manage everything by losing who I am.

I was only beginning to do some regular exercise when I was overweight. It felt awful to be overweight at the gym; I’ve never felt more scrutinized in my life.
I was doing some light jogging and an inclined walk on a treadmill when a very fit girl joined me. After a brief warm-up, she turned to face me, gave me a high five, and encouraged me to keep going before getting off the treadmill.
Having that support when I was accustomed to being gawked at by everyone else in the gym was really motivating. Her small act of kindness had a big impact. © Reddit/FishNchips72

A man who was obviously anxious sat next to me on my regular morning bus ride. “I’m about to confess to my best friend that I’m in love with her,” he blurted out after a few minutes of silence. I offered him some encouragement and my honest assessment.
He grinned at me as he got off the bus and said, “Wish me luck.” I still think about him even though I’ll never know what happened.

Late at night, I got into a taxi, and the driver seemed strange from the beginning. “Do you live alone?” and “Would anyone be waiting for you?” were among the strange questions he began to ask. I had a gut feeling that something was wrong.
At a gas station, I asked him to drop me off early, but he said, “We’re almost there anyway.” After threatening to call the police, I yelled at him to stop the car. At last, he stopped. I exited and ran. I’m still curious about what might have occurred if I hadn’t followed my gut.

I was a university student about two years ago. I went to the bathroom because I was experiencing some gas. I chose to wait until she was finished because I was the only person in there when she entered. She seemed to be in the same predicament as me, so we sat in silence, occasionally letting out little toots, waiting for the other to go.
She asks, “Can we both just fart?” at the end. I say, “Yes please!” while laughing. And for a minute or so after that, we are both laughing and farting at the same time. We are farting because we are laughing, and we are laughing because we are farting.
We washed our hands and said “hello” after finishing around the same time. She was never seen by me again. I still chuckle whenever I recall it. © Reddit/CocoaAndToast

I almost ran into a woman who was standing too close when I went outside to look in the mirror in a department store dressing room. “You’re not supposed to be here,” she said, tilting her head as she stared at me. Her tone was flat, and at first I thought she was kidding. Then she muttered, “This was my day.”
Then she slammed the door after entering her own dressing room. Confused and uneasy, I waited for a while, but when I peered in, the room was deserted. With shivers running up my spine, I walked out of the store.

I remember being at the bus stop very early one morning years ago. Every time I took the 7am bus, I used to see the same guy. The two of us were “nodding terms.”
There was a fireball/disintegrating meteor one morning. We both witnessed it, and he turned to face me, saying gravely, “You know our souls are forever linked now.”
After I stopped going to early morning classes, we resumed our nodding terms, and I never saw him again. I suppose because he was correct and I do recall it. © Reddit/Unknown author

I was trapped in an elevator with a man who freaked out right away. Despite my efforts to remain composed, he began to pace and mutter that “they were probably watching him.” “I knew this would happen,” he said, meeting my eyes. This is a form of discipline.
I couldn’t tell if he was genuinely ill or just afraid. We sat in silence for twenty-five minutes, interrupted only by his whispers. He hurried out without saying anything when the doors eventually opened. That elevator was the last one I used.

I was having a peaceful afternoon sitting by myself in a café when a woman entered, gave me a direct look, and exclaimed, “I knew I’d find you!” I blinked, utterly bewildered. She stormed over and began to complain that I had abandoned her sister following a hookup while on vacation.
She didn’t believe me when I told her she had the wrong person—until she called her sister and found out I wasn’t the one. Everyone in the café stared at her as she muttered an apology and walked out. I didn’t return there.

In a coffee shop, a young girl came up to me, gave me a drawing of a cat, and remarked, “You looked like you needed something nice.” I thanked her with a smile. “Sorry!” her mother mouthed. However, I still have that arbitrary drawing on my refrigerator.

I fell through ice when I was in elementary school. When he saw me fall, a man walking his dog hurried to the beach. It wasn’t far—I was only five meters deep in the pond—but it took some time with my soaked winter clothes as I frantically swam back to the shore.
The man grabbed me by my jacket as I got to the shore. Due to the steep incline, getting up would have been challenging. Since I was in shock, I didn’t thank him, but I’m sure he knows how appreciative I am, and even now, twenty years later, I still wish I had. © Reddit/Omenaa

A stranger tapped my shoulder and gave me a container of hot spaghetti as I was walking home in the rain after a terrible day. Her words, “My grandma made too much,” In addition to providing me with food, that warm pasta served as a reminder that good deeds are still possible.
