Ann Serrano gave famous husband a kidney, years later he betrayed her

In 2005, a woman made an extraordinary sacrifice for her husband, giving him a lifesaving kidney. But despite the depth of her love and generosity, he failed to understand a simple truth: that marriage meant you had to stop dating other people.

After 17 years together, the couple divorced in 2012. Fortunately for the comedian at the heart of this story, his ex-wife let him keep the organ.

Known to fans as “America’s Mexican,” George Lopez has built a career on his dark, personal comedy, often drawn from the difficult experiences of his early life. Now 63, Lopez still carries a note he wrote to himself at 18, reminding him that he would one day “hit the American people like a hammer.”

Lopez’s humor, shaped by a turbulent upbringing, often reflects the abandonment he felt after being left in the care of his eccentric grandmother. She was a deeply mysterious figure; Lopez once recalled how she told him, out of nowhere, that the man he thought was his father might not be at all.

In 1993, Lopez found stability in building a family of his own when he married Ann Serrano, an actor and producer. Together they had a daughter, Mayan, in 1996—and later, Serrano would give Lopez an even greater gift: one of her kidneys.

By 2004, Lopez’s health was in serious decline due to a congenital condition that had slowly poisoned his kidneys over time. Despite how serious it was, Lopez brushed it off for a long time, attributing his fatigue to overwork rather than illness. “Latinos, we only go to the doctor when we are bleeding,” he joked in an interview with Piers Morgan.

When the truth came out, Serrano didn’t hesitate. “There was no question,” she said. “When you are put in that position where you could possibly lose someone you love, it’s a very easy decision.”

The transplant surgery at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in 2005 was a success, and both Lopez and Serrano recovered quickly. In his biography George Lopez: Latino King of Comedy, Lopez acknowledged the miracle that his wife’s kidney was a match, saying it made him cherish each day.

Yet the kidney would end up outlasting the marriage itself.

Before the surgery, Serrano revealed, Lopez had already been unfaithful. Despite this betrayal, she gave him another chance—and a kidney—with the hope of keeping their family together for the sake of their young daughter. But as Lopez’s fame grew, so did his ego, and ultimately, so did the cracks in their relationship.

The tabloids delivered the final blow. Serrano learned through media reports about her husband’s ongoing infidelities. “It was a pretty devastating way to find out,” she said. “Your husband is leading a double life.”

Deciding she couldn’t tolerate it, Serrano filed for divorce. Their daughter, Mayan, who had grown up in the spotlight of The George Lopez Show, was left reeling, later admitting that the public nature of her parents’ split made the pain even harder to bear. She did not speak to her father for nearly four years.

In July 2011, the couple finalized their divorce but emphasized their ongoing commitment to co-parenting and their shared work through the Lopez Foundation, dedicated to kidney disease awareness and organ donation.

Today, George and Mayan have found a unique way to heal. Their real-life story forms the basis of Lopez vs Lopez, a comedy series where father and daughter address their wounds with humor and honesty. While some scenes strike close to home, Mayan says the experience has been healing for both of them.

As for Lopez and Serrano, their bond, though changed, remains strong. They are close friends, a fact that Mayan’s TikTok followers got to see firsthand. In one video, Serrano teased Lopez, joking that he “didn’t realize you had to stop dating when you got married.” In another, when asked if they still loved each other, Serrano replied without hesitation, “Yeah, I love you. He’s the father of my child, he’s my husband, and he’s my friend.”

Their story is one of betrayal and heartbreak, but also resilience, forgiveness, and the complicated beauty of family bonds that endure—even after everything.
