According to their family, the young couple who unexpectedly and unexplainably passed away together in their Michigan home this week had recently been devastated by losing custody of their children.
Before Cameron Hulet, 28, and his wife Courtney, 20, were discovered lying on the floor of their Dundee, Michigan, apartment on Tuesday night, family members say child services had taken the couple’s young sons from their house.
The results of the autopsy are still pending, and their bodies revealed no signs of trauma. Police are still unsure of what happened, but the couple’s family believes drugs may have played a role.
Dundee Village Manager Dave Uhl told the Monroe News, “It’s really a puzzle.” “There is no clue as to what took place. It’s a mystery.
Since their two young sons, ages four months and one year, were placed in foster care, Cameron and Courtney have not been doing well, according to Cameron’s mother, Cheryl Harris.
She claims, “It was devastating to them.” “They called me crying uncontrollably.”
Harris tells PEOPLE that two days prior to her son’s passing, on Sunday night, she had her last conversation with him. Harris claims that despite the fact that he and Courtney were “extremely depressed,” she cannot fathom them harming themselves.
Cameron’s family refused to provide an explanation for the possible removal of the kids. Despite local media reports indicating Cameron had a criminal history, Child Services refused to disclose the details of the case.
However, according to his brother and mother, who spoke to PEOPLE, Cameron was a decent man who worked two jobs to provide for his wife and kids at home.
Garrett Hulet, Cameron’s brother, tells PEOPLE, “[Police] don’t know why two people tragically died.” “He was just living his life, doing okay, as far as I know.”
According to reports, Cameron and Courtney died almost simultaneously, and it seemed like they were both getting ready for dinner.
The Monroe News reported that the couple’s untouched dinner and a pound of marijuana were discovered in their home, suggesting that the drugs were being prepared for sale. There were no indications of forced entry, and neither Cameron nor Courtney displayed overt symptoms of trauma.
Reluctantly, Harris adds, “I loved them both. It might be a drug overdose, but you never know.”
The family says it will take weeks for the results of the autopsy and toxicology tests.
Harris claims, “I spoke with four different officers, and all of them told me they don’t know [what happened].” “What happened is unknown to us.”
Harris tells PEOPLE that Courtney, a “firecracker” and stay-at-home mother, had a difficult time with both pregnancies. The family had to stay at the Ronald McDonald House in Toledo, Ohio, for a few months after the couple’s eldest son was born prematurely with cerebral palsy.
“Those boys were the reason they [lived],” Harris claims. “They simply couldn’t provide the proper care for their boys, even though they loved them.”
Courtney was a store clerk when the couple first met three years ago. Shortly before their first son was born, in April 2015, she and Cameron got married.
Garrett tells PEOPLE, “I could say that my brother was very loyal and would do anything for you, even though there were times when he was stubborn and said things he shouldn’t have said.” “No matter what you were going through, he was there for you. He always had my back and his family’s back.
“He was just a decent guy.”
In Monroe, Michigan, the family is hosting a fundraising dinner on Saturday night. Additionally, a GoFundMe has been established to collect funds for burial costs.
