The suspect in the shootings that targeted Democratic lawmakers is being sought by police. Writings discovered in a fictitious police car at one of the scenes named a number of lawmakers and other officials, according to Brooklyn Park Police Chief Mark Bruley.
Vance Boelter, 57, was named as the suspect by case-related sources. They were not permitted to publicly discuss the investigation, so they spoke to the Associated Press under the condition of anonymity.
Boelter, 57, was appointed by Governor Walz in 2019 to a four-year term on the Governor’s Workforce Development Board, according to documents the New York Post cited. In 2016, while then-Governor Mark Dayton was in office, he had previously been a member of the Governor’s Workforce Development Council.
“We found a manifesto that named numerous lawmakers and other officials when we searched the car. Right away, we alerted the state. “We acted to notify them and provide security where required,” Bruley said.
According to CBS News, state senator John Hoffman and his wife were injured in a separate shooting at their Champlin, Minnesota, home, approximately five miles away, while state representative Melissa Hortman and her husband were shot and killed in their Brooklyn Park home.
Governor Tim Walz described the shootings as politically motivated on Saturday, referring to Hortman and her husband’s deaths as “a political assassination.”
Hortman served in House District 34B and was 55 years old. Senate District 34 is represented by Hoffman, 60. They were both Democrats. The investigation is being assisted by the FBI.
“With dignity, empathy, wit, and a spirit of service, Hortman served the people of Minnesota,” Walz said. She was a strong public official. A giant and a fixture in Minnesota.
Hoffman and his wife were both shot several times, Walz said.
Walz declared, “We are cautiously optimistic that they will survive this assassination attempt.”
As authorities look for a suspect, a shelter-in-place order is in effect Saturday within three miles of the Edinburgh Golf Course in Brooklyn Park.
The man is described as a white man with brown hair who is dressed in a black tactical vest, blue pants, and a blue shirt. He is impersonating a law enforcement official, according to officials.
It is advised that residents wait for two police officers before opening their doors. In the event that only one officer arrives, dial 911 right away. If any officers were dispatched to your house, the police will be aware of it.
According to CBS News, Brooklyn Park police assisted Champlin police, who arrived at Senator Hoffman’s residence first. Then a Brooklyn Park police sergeant made the decision to see how other local lawmakers were doing.
When officers got to Representative Hortman’s house at around 3:30 in the morning, they noticed what appeared to be a police SUV with its emergency lights on. After exiting the house and exchanging gunshots with the police, the suspect fled on foot.
