A Dream Honeymoon Turns Into Unimaginable Heartbreak

What was meant to be a long-awaited honeymoon for Jake Rosencranz and his wife Leah tragically turned into a nightmare that no one could have predicted.

The young couple, who had built a joyful life together in Colorado, had finally set aside time to celebrate their marriage with a dream trip to Florida. But on June 21, 2025, while enjoying a peaceful day at New Smyrna Beach, Jake’s life was cut short in a horrifying twist of fate.

Lightning Strikes on a Seemingly Calm Day

The tragedy occurred at around 12:30 p.m. as Jake, 29, stood in ankle-deep surf near 27th Avenue Beach. Despite clear skies overhead, a storm system miles inland was already brewing. According to FOX 35 Storm Tracker Radar, the area recorded 170 lightning strikes in a short period — one of which struck Jake directly.

“On Friday June 20, a 29-year-old man from Colorado was struck by lightning shortly before 12:30 PM while standing in ankle-deep water in New Smyrna Beach,” stated Tammy Malphurs, Director of Volusia County Beach Safety Ocean Rescue. “CPR was immediately initiated, and we performed life-saving measures. He was transported from the scene unresponsive, and he sadly lost his life from the injuries he sustained.”

Immediate Rescue Efforts Couldn’t Save Him

Lifeguards rushed to Jake’s aid, beginning CPR and emergency treatment before paramedics transported him to AdventHealth in New Smyrna Beach. Despite valiant efforts by medical teams, Jake passed away the following day, June 21. His family was by his side in his final moments.

A Life Cut Short — Remembering Jake Rosencranz

Originally from Weston, Massachusetts, Jake was described by friends and family as a “true Coloradan.” He had built a beautiful life with Leah in Frisco, Colorado, where their days were filled with hiking, skiing, golfing, and exploring the Rocky Mountains with their dog, Bonnie.

Jake and Leah’s love story began during a sophomore chemistry class at Holderness School in Plymouth, New Hampshire. Their relationship blossomed into marriage, and in July 2023, they tied the knot at Arapahoe Basin Ski Area — a meaningful location filled with cherished memories.

The Florida honeymoon was a delayed celebration of their marriage, making the tragedy even more heartbreaking.

Outpouring of Support and Grief

In a Facebook post, Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood shared condolences:

“So sorry for the tragic loss of a young man here on a delayed honeymoon with his wife. At 29 years old, he should have had many more anniversaries with her for years to come.”

Jake’s brother-in-law, David Curtis, started a GoFundMe campaign to help Leah manage medical expenses and the sudden financial strain. The fundraiser’s goal is set at $75,000, with an overwhelming outpouring of support from friends, family, and strangers.

“This devastating loss impacts so many loved ones, but especially Leah who will be navigating life without her husband and best friend,” the GoFundMe reads.

A One-in-a-Million Tragedy

According to the CDC, the odds of being struck by lightning in the United States are less than one in a million. Sadly, Jake became Florida’s first lightning-related fatality of 2025.

In an unrelated incident that same day, two individuals were also reportedly struck indirectly by lightning while playing golf at Venetian Bay Golf Course nearby. Their conditions remain unknown.

A Heartbreaking End to a Love Story

Jake Rosencranz’s tragic death has left a deep void in the hearts of those who knew him. What was supposed to be a beautiful chapter in his and Leah’s life turned into a heartbreaking reminder of how fragile life can be.

As tributes continue to pour in, Jake is remembered as a loving husband, loyal friend, and adventurous spirit whose memory will live on in the hearts of all who loved him.
