Fear hit like a shockwave.
One moment, downtown Chicago pulsed with its usual rhythm — families sharing late dinners, tourists taking photos, workers hurrying home — and the next, that ordinary heartbeat broke. Gunfire tore through the night, scattering people into the streets. Parents pulled children close. Strangers shielded one another. Bags, shoes, and phones littered the ground — the small debris of lives interrupted.

When the noise stopped, an uneasy silence settled over the city. It was the kind of silence that doesn’t soothe, only exposes what’s been lost.
