New Epstein docs mention Madeleine McCann – here’s what a witness saw

A single witness statement buried within the recently unsealed Epstein case files has sparked renewed online discussion about one of the world’s most heartbreaking missing-child cases.

The document, dated 2009, describes a reported sighting of a young girl who “looked like Madeleine McCann” walking with a woman the witness claimed “looked just like Ghislaine Maxwell.” While the reference has drawn attention on social media, authorities have not confirmed any verified link between the disappearance of Madeleine McCann and convicted sex trafficker Ghislaine Maxwell.

Madeleine McCann’s Disappearance

Madeleine McCann was just three years old when she vanished on May 3, 2007, during a family holiday at the Ocean Club resort in Praia da Luz, Portugal.

Her parents, Kate McCann and Gerry McCann, had gone to dinner with friends roughly 100 yards from the apartment where Madeleine and her two-year-old twin siblings were sleeping. When Kate returned to check on the children, Madeleine was gone.

Police were alerted immediately. Resort staff and guests searched through the night, and border authorities were placed on high alert. Portuguese investigators initially stated they believed Madeleine had been abducted and released a description of a man reportedly seen carrying a child near the apartment that evening.

The case quickly became one of the most widely reported missing-person investigations in modern history. Despite international cooperation and years of inquiries across multiple countries, Madeleine has never been found.

A Witness Statement in the Epstein Files

Nearly two decades later, Madeleine’s name unexpectedly appeared in documents connected to the prosecution of Jeffrey Epstein and the 2021 conviction of Ghislaine Maxwell on child sex trafficking charges.

The reference appears in a single witness statement dated July 7, 2020. The unidentified UK witness claimed to have reported a sighting in the fall of 2009 to local police.

According to the statement, the witness was walking behind a woman and a young girl on a quiet Sunday in September 2009. A middle-aged man was reportedly walking ahead of them.

The witness wrote:

“When I got up close to the girl I noticed she looked like Madeline McCann. The woman was trying to hurry her along and seemed agitated that I was there.”

One detail that has drawn attention is the claim that the child “held her hand over her right eye.” Madeleine had a rare eye condition called coloboma, which creates a distinctive mark in the pupil and was frequently highlighted in public appeals for information.

The statement continued:

“Didn’t think about it for years till [I] saw the FB post about Maxwell and the theory of her taking Madeline McCann. The woman I saw looked just like Ghislaine Maxwell.”

The account was reportedly submitted to the FBI’s National Threat Operations Center.

Earlier 2009 Leads

The renewed attention has also revived interest in leads from 2009, including a composite image commissioned by private investigators working with the McCann family. At the time, British media described the image as resembling a “Victoria Beckham lookalike,” referring to Victoria Beckham, who was known for her short dark hairstyle.

That sighting reportedly placed the woman in Barcelona days after Madeleine vanished. However, no official confirmation ever linked that image to Maxwell, and investigators did not publicly identify the woman.

Official Response

Despite online speculation, authorities in both the United States and the United Kingdom have emphasized that the reference in the Epstein files does not constitute verified evidence.

In a press release, the U.S. Department of Justice stated:

“This production may include fake or falsely submitted images, documents or videos, as everything that was sent to the FBI by the public was included in the production that is responsive to the Act.”

The witness statement remains a single, uncorroborated account within millions of pages of released documents. Officials have not indicated that it has prompted new investigative action, nor have they confirmed any connection between Madeleine McCann’s disappearance and the crimes of Epstein or Maxwell.

While the resurfacing of Madeleine’s name has understandably stirred emotions and speculation, investigators have consistently urged caution regarding unverified claims.

The search for answers in Madeleine McCann’s disappearance continues to this day, with authorities maintaining that the case remains open.
