Josh Groban And Kelly Clarkson Perform A Heavenly Duet From “Phantom Of The Opera”
Kelly Clarkson joined Josh Groban for “All I Ask of You” during Stages Live, his concert event shown on PBS as a television special. Drawn from The Phantom of the Opera, the number was among the musical-theater selections featured in the program and was performed as a duet by the two singers.
The event brought material from Groban’s Stages album into a live setting. The project fulfilled his long-held desire to record songs from Broadway and other stage productions. Discussing its origins, Groban said musical theater had been important to him for years and that many of the selections were pieces he had hoped to perform since high school.
Recording “All I Ask of You” meant finding a vocalist for Christine Daaé’s part, and Groban selected Clarkson. Before she appeared at Stages Live, he explained to the crowd that he had approached the duet as something requiring both a distinctive recording treatment and a particularly distinguished singing partner.
Clarkson emerged in the spotlight in a black dress. She shared Groban’s interest in Broadway, while The Phantom of the Opera had an additional personal connection for her: it was the first musical she had seen. She also told those in attendance that playing Christine had long been one of her ambitions and credited Groban with finally giving her the opportunity.
