Chapter 8: The Lie Behind the Funeral
“Running from what?” Ethan asked.
Lauren’s eyes moved slowly toward Vanessa.
The room followed her gaze.
Vanessa laughed once, cold and sharp.
“You cannot be serious.”
Lauren’s voice was quiet, but it carried.
“I found documents. Bank transfers. Legal papers. A guardianship petition prepared before the fire.”
Ethan’s brow tightened.
“Guardianship?”
Lauren looked at Noah.
“For him.”
Noah pressed his face into her shoulder.
Lauren continued, each word painful.
“Someone was preparing to have me declared unstable. Someone wanted me removed from my son’s life.”
Vanessa’s face hardened.
“This is insane.”
Lauren looked at Ethan.
“That night, I went to confront the attorney. On the way back, someone followed my car. I crashed near the old bridge.”
